about (the short version) mirele weston was once a normal human, until they were manipulated into trading their mortal life for the survival of an entire city. now, they're destined for a long life of solitude, tied down to one city for the rest of their life-- so, forever. after having been around for nearly three centuries, they're basically running on a sense of obligation and the horrible crushing terror of knowing they're kind of responsible for the lives of nearly a hundred thousand people.
about (the long version) mirele was the middle child of three (with an older brother and a younger sister) in an extremely isolated and small island village, and until they left for the first time, it was basically the only world they knew. in their youth, they were considered a bit strange, at best, for their morbid interests and difficulty fitting in with others their age. "friends" wasn't really a word that people tended to think of in relation to mirele, and that certainly didn't change after they were wrongly accused of murder and essentially placed under house arrest. but when the god under their island died, the resulting fallout lead to the deaths of most of its inhabitants in just a matter of days.

managing to escape on an abandoned raft, mirele was lucky enough to only spend a little over two days at sea before being found by a fishing boat from the nearby city-state of araceli-benat. the leaders of the city benevolently took them in, giving them a temporary place to stay. except it wasn't all that benevolent, of course. the god araceli had recently killed the...late god benat, and the city would, sooner or later, meet the same fate as mirele's village. which is where mirele came in. as thanks for their rescue, they agreed to help, without knowing just what that would entail.

so a few short days after their arrival, they were taken underground to araceli and killed, so that araceli could bring them back to life. they weren't human any longer; they were able to serve the function of a god, which was basically to preserve the safety of the city and its people. in order to hide the truth of what they'd done, the story became that mirele was just someone who had been blessed by the god araceli with longevity, and everything regarding the well-being of the city was totally fine.

while the leaders figured out how exactly to deal with someone that was now a god, mirele was once again isolated from society. for quite some time, they were kept in a room that was basically a nice prison cell (and later, subjected to experimentation to try to gain an understanding of their immortality), but eventually was provided with a place to live on their own, which they left as little as possible. they mostly left only for necessities and for the other aspect of their duty-- to draw out and assist in hunting creatures that were affected by the imperfect balance of things in araceli-benat.

for a long while, days, months, years all blended together as less of a life they were living and more of a routine that they performed unconsciously. and then seth came along. at first, he was just someone who broke up the usual routine for a day. then he came back. and kept visiting. and because he was the first person to treat mirele as a friend, let alone an actual person, it was easy to get attached, to start enjoying things again and feeling actual emotions again. enough that, when seth met with an accidental demise, mirele didn't even consider the consequences before asking (begging, really) araceli to bring him back, just as what had been done to mirele so many years ago.

when seth awoke, there was some explaining to do-- because that whole "not telling anyone that they were actually a god" issue extended to their only friend...and he was not happy about the lie or his lack of a choice in the matter of his own life. entirely reasonably, seth was horrified about facing the life of an immortal, and once he left, he didn't come back, leaving mirele even more alone than before.
